Young wins at Ahoghill to take lead in road race series
Sunday, May 4, 2014
Ballymena Road Club – Chain Reaction Cycles – held the second round of their three event "scratch” road racing league series at Ahoghill last Wednesday evening. Twenty seven riders started the Northstone sponsored race and they all went off in a mass start group. The course took in Ballynafae road from Ahoghill and then the fast descent of Tully and the left turn at the bottom of the hill on to the Randalstown road.
Three riders, Tommy Wilson, Connor Young and Ryan Shaw broke clear on the Largy road and they maintained a small gap to Kilnock, Whitesides corner and on to the finish on the Glebe road at Ahoghill. Veteran Tommy Wilson told me "the young guns” fought it out for the win while he took third place.
Connor Young proved best in the sprint, winning in 36 minutes 34 seconds from Ryan Shaw with Wilson third. All three were given the same time, which was 24 seconds ahead of fourth placed Ryan Bankhead, who had won the first round at Broughshane on 16th April.
Bankhead led in a sixteen rider group for this fourth position. Connor Young, who was second in round one, now leads the series with a total of 19 points; Ryan Bankhead is second with 17 points while Ryan Shaw is third on 12 points.
The final round is scheduled to take place over two laps (18 miles) of the Caddy circuit on 14th May. However that is the same date as round one of the inter club road racing series, which Connor Young won last year, so this may mean the need for a date change for the BRC event. The inter club calendar reads –
Wednesday 14th May Spires CC. Wednesday 4th June Ballymoney CC. Tuesday 17th June Bann Wheelers. Wednesday 16th July Ballymena RC. Thursday 24th July Roe Valley CC. Thursday 14th August Carn Wheelers.
