Local cyclists in action at Castlereagh and Tobermore.

Ballymena Road Club – Northstone – cyclist Brian Geddis, from Dunloy, finished fifth in Sunday's Carn Wheelers Classic "A4” road race over five laps of the seven miles Wood Road Circuit in Tobermore.

James Thompson was the winner of this event from his Bann Wheelers team mate Nigel Quigley with Conor McAteer (Bann Valley), whom many BRC riders will remember from the annual fun tour series, in third place.

BRC associate member Dermot Hughes (Phoenix) finished runner up in the over 50's event, that's Dermot's second runner up placing of the season, third time lucky?

JOHN MOORE memorial.

Philip Bremner, from Ahoghill,was best placed of the local riders when he finished seventh in the John Moore memorial "A” race at Castlereagh on Saturday. The race was won by Simon Williams while Michael McMullan won the "B” event. BRC's Colin Scullion has been leading the "B” race before being caught before the finish.

Michelin tour of the lough

Also on Saturday a large number of Ballymena Road Club cyclists joined forces with riders from the Michelin team Bibsport club for their 75 miles tour around Lough Neagh.

The weather was dry, although quite windy, which was a welcome change from the drenching we have been experiencing recently.

Anyone who was on the wrong work shift and missed Saturday's ride or indeed anyone who enjoyed the experience will have an opportunity to repeat the tour again this Saturday from the Enkalon car park, on the Randalstown road in Antrim, the starting time will be 9.30am.

This Saturday 26th March East Tyrone cycling club promote their annual Cicli Sport grand prix races at Rouskey Road Coagh.

This event is for all categories of senior from A1 to A4 and youth racing is also included with the underage riders racing at 10 am.

The 54 miles senior event has a 12 noon starting time.

Saturday 26th March Michelin tour of Lough Neagh (ride two)

On Sunday it is the turn of the Island Wheelers to hold their P J Logan cup races. Again all categories of seniors from A+ A1 to A4 will be catered for with a choice of two events at 62 miles and 30 miles. The event HQ is at the Gortgonis Sports complex and the race organiser, James McLaughlin, may be contacted at jamesmac4@fsmail.net

River Bann charity ride.

Looking further ahead to Sunday 17th April when Adrian McPeake of "Bicycle shack” in Portglenone has organised a 45 miles charity bike ride to raise funds to support the work of the Community Rescue Service, Search and Rescue Portglenone unit.

The ride will start at 10.30 am from Bank Square in Portglenone and will follow a route along side the river Bann to Christie Park in Coleraine where a river rescue display will take place.

The Community Rescue Service work in conjunction with the PSNI in searching for people who are lost or in distress on both land and water. Volunteers are often on 24 hour call out .They provide a crucial service to the community. More information about what they do can be found on their website www.communityrescue.org
