14 More Earn Bronze on Fun Tours
Wednesday, October 23, 2013
The cyclists on Saturday’s seventh ride in this season’s Ballymena Road Club - Chain Reaction Cycles -fun tour series again enjoyed the best weather conditions of the week.
The heavy rain on Friday continued through the night and right up until half an hour before the fun tours were to start. Then, miraculously, it dried up and everyone was amazed at how lucky the cyclists were once again for their weekly outing.
The threat of continuing rain must have discouraged a few riders but, nevertheless, there was still a big turnout of 63 for the event and they headed out in three groups.
The "A” group, which had 27 riders, left at the slightly earlier time of 9.15am and they completed a 56 miles route at 18.9mph. Their circuit took in Randalstown, Antrim, Crumlin, Glenavy, Hannastown and on to the Ulster Grand Prix circuit to the hairpin and downhill to Dundrod. Then it was on to Carnaghliss road and across to the Sevenmile straight and the fast descent to Antrim and back to Ballymena on the A26.
The 26 in the touring group rode to Carniny, Dunminning, Glarryford, Dunloy, Garryduff, Rasharkin and Kilrea.
Then they visited Portna locks on the river Bann. It was a great day to visit the locks as the river was a raging torrent having been swollen by the relentless rain fall of the previous 24 hours. It was indeed an impressive sight. They returned via Portglenone and up around the horseshoe bend on the Hiltonstown road to Killyless and then Cullybackey, which makes a change from having to climb Tully! Their average was 15mph for the 46 miles route.
A third group of eight riders completed a 45 miles ride to Carnlough, Waterfoot and Glenariff.
Another £40 was donated to the Chernobyl Children’s appeal which makes the total now £900.
Another fourteen riders completed their fifth tour on Saturday to earn their bronze medals. The successful participants on Saturday were: Derek Agnew, Alan Blair, Hall Booth, Matthew Brennan, Liz Carey, Christina Clarke, Stephen Dempsey, Derek Dougan, Siobhan Fisher, Jackie Knowles, Shaunna McAllister, Danny O’Loan, Lori Phillips and Ryan Shaw.
Fun tours continue.
Ride seven in the 13 week fun tour series will take place this Saturday morning from Rex Bonar House at 9.30 am. The "A” group will continue to leave at the slightly earlier time of 9.15am.
