Storming Through New York State

Tuesday, May 28, 2013
Ballymena Road Club cyclist Chris Beattie battled through torrential rain on 19th May in New York State to place 21st overall out of 7000 starters, travelling from 70 countries, in the 3rd Annual New York Grand Fondo.
Chris narrowly missed out on a podium place in the 40-44 age group with a 4th place position.  Overall honours this year went to former professional Stefano Nicoletti from Italy.

This year the event was a round of the 2013 Prestigio series which is composed of the 10 largest and hardest Grand Fondo events in Italy so this signifies the esteem in which the Italians place the NY event!

The severe wet weather on race day was not forecast for the region.  It left competitors including Chris battling to stay warm especially on the long descents over the 105 mile parcours. Descending from Bear Mountain was treacherous on the wet, slick roads with visibility down to yards due to the low cloud, mist and rain which was a starch contrast to last year’s conditions!  However the excellent organisation and marshalling on course made for a safe and enjoyable day.
