George wins Bonar Cup

Tuesday, May 21, 2013
Ballymena Road Club – Chain Reaction Cycles – riders took part in their annual Rex Bonar cup road race on the Lisnamurrican circuit at Broughshane on Wednesday night.

The Northstone sponsored event attracted thirty six entrants with another six in the youth race for the Clarke’s tyres cup.

Visiting rider Stuart Carley (Muckamore Centurions) and teenager George Graham broke clear of the front group the first time up the hill on the Caherty Road and they proceeded to ride a "two-up” race throughout the five lap 25 miles race.

The scratch riders made up their 6 minutes 30 seconds handicap and caught all ahead of them by the finish - with the exception of the front pair, and so the honours were shared with Carley winning the sprint and second placed Graham collecting the silverware as first Ballymena club rider. The winner’s time was 68 minutes 15 seconds.

Another visitor Aaron Swan (TSC) finished third with veteran Tommy Wilson fourth.

Claire Gillespie was first of the ladies with Eileen Burns second and Emma Smyth third.

The youth race was won by Breandan McCavana in 16 minutes 55 seconds.
