H & M Wilson Cup Report

Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Teenager Aaron Swan was first home in last Wednesday night’s Ballymena Road Club – Chain Reaction Cycles - H&M Wilson cup 26 miles road race which was held over three laps of the Caddy circuit.
This was the first round on the Northstone sponsored, club road racing league series, for the William Smyth perpetual trophy.
The 28 entrants went off in three groups at the start with zero, three minutes and 3 minutes 30 seconds handicaps.
Conditions were very challenging on the opening lap with a heavy shower of rain making progress difficult for all the entrants.
Conditions were to improve as the race progressed but it was never going to be easy.
Aaron Swan and veteran rider Tommy Wilson rode clear of the scratch group early on the opening lap. Group two caught the leaders after just seven miles and then, at the nine miles point Swan and Wilson also reached the front of the race.
They were to ride straight past this amalgamated group with only Nigel Kernohan able to briefly stay with them.
This pair continued to build up a decisive lead over the second and third laps and by the finish had 57 seconds to spare over third placed Ryan Bankhead.
Swan beat Wilson in the sprint for first place although it is Wilson , as first BRC rider, who wins the silverware.
