Four Winners in Three Days!

Monday, August 13, 2012

Ballymena Road Club – Chain Reaction Cycles - riders and officials and officials were kept extremely busy last week with their three day race programme.

It all kicked off on Monday night at Randalstown with the Mark McCullough cup 20 miles short circuit event which took place on the Ahoghill road, Branch road, Portglenone road, two miles per lap circuit.

The four minutes handicap unwound after half distance and a thirteen rider group then formed at the front for the final four laps.

Nigel Kernohan, who won the A Bonar cup road race at Broughshane in July, put in a late attack up the Ahoghill road on the last lap, and he managed to maintain his advantage to the finish to win by half a dozen lengths in 54 minutes 48 seconds. His training partner Ryan Currie was second and Michelin’s Uel Cunningham third.

The second event was Tuesday night’s Sherdan Caldwell memorial Crebilly Hill Climb. This time it was the turn of one of the club’s lightweight racers, Simon Taggart, to take the honours. Simon also won the Crebilly hill climb in 2011 when he recorded a time of 1 minute 21.15 seconds. This year he showed great consistency and posted a winning time of 1 minute 21.07 seconds, clockwork or what? Matthew Brennan was second with 1-24.71 and Craig Crawford (TSC) third 1-25.27.

Event three, on Wednesday night, was the Sammy Gaston cup 25 miles handicapped road race at Glarryford. This time the scratch riders failed to overcome their starting handicap and this left a nine rider group clear at the front to contest the final sprint.

Clifford Grant proved best in the gallop for the line and held off Quinton McFall with Craig Crawford third.

The five youth race at Glarryford was won by Andrew Wallace in 15 minutes 33 seconds. Breandan McCavana was second at 2 seconds and Emma Gordon third.
