Please read the following post shared by Dromore CC. As a club BRC cannot emphasise enough the importance of Cycling Ireland membership/insurance for ALL those participating in club runs. BRC would like to wish all those involved a speedy recovery.

CYCLE IRELAND INSURANCE:
Some of you may be aware that there was a road incident involving several club members on Monday evening near Donaghacloney.

Several of our cyclists fell heavily due to the presence of a third party on the road. (We don't want to be any more specific as police and insurance company researches into the incident are currently on-going).

One club member is still in hospital with a number of injuries that may take some time to repair and heal. Another has facial scarring that will cause great discomfort for some time. A couple of others were injured to some degree.

In addition some of the bikes are pretty seriously damaged and may not be repairable.

We would like to extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to all concerned, and to their family members who would have been very concerned as information began to arrive home.

This incident comes on the back of a number of serious injuries to other club members in the past year or so who are still carrying the scars.

We think that these serious crashes are isolated incidents and come after quite a few years without any major problems.

We would like to take this opportunity to underline the importance of insurance for club members. As everyone will know, we are affiliated with Cycling Ireland and carry their third party insurance for club events.

As part of your CI registration and license you will also be covered by their insurance, with the restrictions and value caps as laid out on their website. You should familiarise yourself with what this insurance covers.

In addition many cyclists take out additional insurance, particularly for expensive bikes and loss of earnings if they are not otherwise covered by their employment or home insurance policies.

Dromore Cycling Club makes the holding of a Cycling Ireland license, with it's built-in insurance cover, a condition of membership.

Given that CI membership runs from date of application, it is a tricky task for committee members with day jobs to keep on top of who does and who doesn't have a license. We try! But fundamentally it is down to each member to be compliant with club conditions of membership.

PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE A VALID CURRENT LICENSE!
PLEASE RENEW YOUR LICENSE PROMPTLY WHEN DUE!

If you are unsure, please check with Cycling Ireland or a committee member who will try and help you with this.

Some new members may already have a British Cycling license which carries largely equivalent insurance. We can accept this form of license on a case-by-case basis - please talk to a committee member to check and confirm.

Your committee believes that people's safety is of paramount importance and will work to learn any and all lessons that incidents such as this present.

Finally, please remember that this was a one-off incident - don't let it put you off. Just stay vigilant and help us to help you and your fellow club mates have a safe and enjoyable ride.

Footnote:
1. Please don't take umbrage if you are asked by a committee member, ride leader, or even your fellow clubmate if your CI license is up to date. Also don't be offended if you are turned away from a group ride if you do not have a license. This is in everyone's interests.
2. Please note the comment from Paul below WRT incidents involving two or more clubmates or incidents with other licensed riders on CI supported club rides and events.
