Ballymena Road Club’s Eileen Burns, from Kells, successfully defended her Ulster ladies 25 miles time trial champion’s title at Letterkenny on Sunday.
Eileen clocked a winning time of 57 minutes 15 seconds on the tough "out and back” course. Eileen, who won all four time trial title races at 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles in 2014 has been successful in all but the 100 so far this season with the 100 scheduled to take place this coming Sunday 6th September.
Eileen gives an insight into her build up for Sunday’s title race.
"Myself and Jason completed the mixed gender 2 up 10 miles Time Trial at Armagh on Thursday night. It was a great opportunity for us to work together to complete a 10 on our time trial bikes. We worked hard together and came out with a great time of 20:54. We aimed for a 21minute ride, so did better than we expected. This was good enough to win the mixed pairs section and we were also fourth fastest overall the teams.”
Regarding the 25 Eileen said. "I am very happy to retain my Ulster 25 Champion title for 2015. It had been a goal of mine to do this so I am very pleased. It was an out and back course, consisting of long dragging climbs, it was easy by no means. I tried hard to the end and it paid off.”
"Another goal of mine this year was to be selected to represent Ulster team in the Ras na mBan, from 9th until 13th of September.
The selection criteria was released in March time, which was very detailed and demanded a lot of commitment to racing. This included competing at an A4 level as well as completing 2 stage races (Omagh and Donegal). I completed all that I was asked for and got selected. Because of my results in the A4 category, I have obtained enough points and have now been upgraded to an A3 rider, which was something I didn’t expect for this season.” Concluded Eileen
