Olympian, Irish champion and Ras winner Cassidy to ride Billy Kerr Sportive

Wednesday, August 12, 2015
One of Ireland’s best ever amateur cyclists Philip Cassidy has entered this Saturday’s Billy Kerr sportive.

Philip, 53, is a founder member of the Dunboyne cycling club and owns a very successful cycling shop – Cycleways in Parnell Street Dublin.

In many ways Philip’s successes mirror those of Billy Kerr. He won the Ras Tailteann stage race in 1983 and again, 16 years later, in 1999 as a 37 year old.

He was Irish road race Champion in 1987 and again in 1999 and he won both the Tour of the North and Tour of Ulster in 2000. He also represented Ireland at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and in 1988 in Seoul South Korea.

The 16 year gap between his Ras wins can be put down to working 6 days a week in his cycle shop and therefore not having enough time to train properly.

In 2007 Philip was guest of honour at the road club’s annual prize presentation dinner at Leighinmohr house hotel.

Saturday 15th August Billy Kerr Sportive, Eaton Park, Broughshane Road, Ballymena starting from 8am. On-line entry is still open. Maps and more details of the event can be obtained at the sportive  www.facebook.com/BillyKerrSportive
