Ballymena Road Club – Chain Reaction Cycles – rider Eileen Burns successfully defended her Ulster ladies’ 10 miles time trial championship title, and collected her second championship win of the season in Donegal on Sunday. Just for good measure Breandan McCavana took the silver medal when he was runner up in the junior championship.
The championship was promoted by Donegal Bay CC and took place on the N15 course at Barnesmore, South Donegal. Riders set off from the shadow of the famous Barnesmore Gap and headed straight in towards Donegal Town, before turning at the Drumlonagher Roundabout and re-tracing to Barnesmore.
Afterwards Eileen said "I am delighted to retain another of my Ulster time trial titles; this time in the Ulster 10 miles time trial championship. It was a good course, on the N15, which is the main road between Ballybofey and Donegal town, and we were able to get a drive over it before the race started.
There was a deceiving head wind on the outward leg so I tried hard to the roundabout, but on my return leg I soon realised that I was not getting much assistance from a tail wind, and as it was an upwards gradient to finish and this made it very difficult. I got a time of 22:45 (1st lady and 18th overall). I am also pleased to say that Breandan McCavana recorded 23.16 to take the junior silver medal and my husband Jason got 22:02 to come in 12th overall.
There is now only about a month and a half left on the race calendar and I aim to work hard to see if I can get a better time for my "10” before the end of the season.” Added Eileen
